And the winner is... In an earlier entry I mentioned that Lily and I were looking for a song to dub "our song" and I had made an audition tape so she could pick one. I really wasn't hopeful that she'd like anything on the tape. I'd been striking out on all my previous suggestions, and I knew that Lily didn’t much care for most of the music I liked. Therefore I was doubly astonished when not only did she pick a song on the tape, but she picked the OLDEST song on the tape. I like a lot of music that was made before Lily was born, but this particular song topped the charts nearly ten years before I was born. Actually, I shouldn’t have been so surprised - I used to hear a lot of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons playing on her MP3 list. The version of this song that I like the best was by the vocal group the Duprees and was a hit in 1962. It is also a sort of anachronism - it was a top-ten hit by a doo-wop group when doo-wop was way past its prime. You Belong To Me (Pee Wee King/Redd Stewart/Chilton Price) See the pyramids along the Nile, Watch the sunrise from a tropic isle, But remember darling all the while, You belong to me. See the market place in old Algiers, Send me photographs and souvenirs, But remember when a dream appears, You belong to me. I'll be so alone without you, Maybe you'll be lonely too, and blue. Fly the ocean in a silver plane, Watch the jungle when it's wet with rain, But remember 'til you're home again, You belong to me.
